SUM OF SINES
Every story has a sound.
Every sound is the sum of sine waves.
From that simplest of building blocks emerges every texture, every emotion, every musical gesture. Sum of Sines is built on the belief that composition and sound design are not separate disciplines, but different expressions of the same craft: finding the sonic language a story needs.
I compose music that serves the story—not music that asks to be noticed. Sometimes that means a full orchestra. Sometimes it means a single note. The goal is always the same: to find the detail, the colour, or the silence that makes an image feel inevitable.
About
Welcome. I'm Frederik Van de Moortel, a Belgian composer and sound designer working in film, television and the performing arts.
For more than twenty-five years, I have been creating scores and sound worlds for directors, producers and artists across Europe and beyond. My work ranges from intimate acoustic recordings to large orchestral productions, from experimental sound design to immersive Dolby Atmos mixes.
As a composer, instrumentalist and recording engineer, I can follow an idea from the first sketch to the final mix. Whether writing for live musicians, recording my own instruments, designing sounds with analogue synthesizers or producing orchestral mock-ups with Vienna Symphonic Library, every project begins with the same question:
What does this story need to sound like?
Craft
Sometimes the emotional impact lies in harmony. Sometimes in timbre. Sometimes in silence.
I work across composition, orchestration, performance, recording, sound design and immersive mixing because these disciplines naturally overlap. The line between music and sound is often imaginary; the most compelling moments happen where they meet.
Working from my own Dolby Atmos studio, I compose, record, edit and mix in-house, delivering everything from stereo masters to immersive 7.1.4 mixes and production-ready stems for the final dub.
